Gene Chizik's Top 5 Auburn Games: West Virginia '09

When Gene Chizik got to Auburn, he wanted to deliver a win that would send the shockwaves through the college football world, and I believe this win did exactly that. In 2008, Auburn met West Virginia in Morgantown and were delivered a beat-down of 34-17. In 2009, Chizik called this game "unfinished business"...and thats exactly what it was.

Auburn were down early 21-10 after the first quarter, and after that Auburn stormed back through the next 3 quarters and literally snatched the game out of West Virginia's hands. After the Wes Byrum FG, Darvin Adams caught a 4 yard TD pass from Chris Todd in the second quarter which cut the lead to 21-20 by half-time. The third quarter saw Auburn and West Virginia exchange touchdowns before Bitancurt hit a 28 yard FG which gave West Virginia the 30-27 lead.

The fourth quarter was a different story, Auburn took the lead for the first time in the game after Darvin Adams caught another touchdown, this time from a 17 yard pass from Chris Todd. With Auburn up by only 4 points, someone on defense had to make the play. Craig Stevens intercepted a pass from Jarrett Brown with three and a half minutes left to extend the lead to 41-30, which had then put the game away for Auburn.

This one was included because of the magnitude of this match-up. Auburn had revenge on their minds, and as you saw in 2010 Auburn doesn't give up when down by a large margin, and this was the first game which proved that.
